Fred Bowen at Montpelier Elementary School
In an unusual turn, author and sports writer Fred Bowen introduced AOB to a new elementary school, instead of the other way around! Fred shared stories with the Montpelier fourth graders about his childhood teachers, his less-than-enthusiastic feelings about writing, and his dream of making the Red Sox. Discussing both his fiction and non-fiction work, Fred described his writing methods while holding up the physical relics of the process: a tattered first draft, a tiny weathered notebook, and a shiny new published book. Fred’s message to students is that they can be the best with hard work – if they think they are “bad” at something, whether it be basketball or reading, that status is only about their abilities now. With practice, Fred told students, they may end up being and doing what they never expected!
