Joan Trumpauer Mulholland at Lynbrook Elementary School

At one point early in Joan Trumpauer Mulholland’s first presentation to sixth graders at Lynbrook Elementary School, a young man leaned over to his teacher and whispered, “I can’t believe this is real!”  Students and teachers alike were captivated by Joan’s stories of her lunch counter sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, and her front lines experience as a part of the Civil Rights Movement.  Curious hands shot into the air when she showed her mug shot, and students’ respectful tone in framing their questions honored Joan’s contributions to our society.  Each student received a copy of the middle-grade biography of Joan, She Stood for Freedom, which Joan signed.
