Monica Hesse at McKinley Tech HS and The Library of Congress Young Readers Center
McKinley Tech students were quick to note parallels between the current American political climate, modern refugee crises, and the World War II setting of Monica Hesse’s novel The Girl in the Blue Coat. Monica discussed her research process for journalistic work as well her fiction writing, sharing inspirational photos and the increasingly important need to cull information from reliable resources. Moving to the Library of Congress Young Readers Center for a separate conversation with students from the YRC’s Teen Board, Monica touched on the power of resistance as well as steps she takes as a writer to convey with objectivity perspectives that differ from her own. Every student received a copy of The Girl in the Blue Coat.
